Mahashweta precisely tugs at the right emotional strings with such lucidity and simplicity that one can’t help cheering or grieving with the protagonist’s rise, fall and then rise again. We don’t see Anu as an independent thinking woman. Sudha Murty was one author whose works I had shunned for so long due to this same prejudice. Cure for this disease varies mahahweta person to person and she’s seriously affected. In the first half of the novel, Anupama is gentle, loving and a caring woman and after a heart break, she becomes fierce, more career oriented, more powerful girl.
How she overcome the all the obstacles and live the mahashwets is the rest of story. This poignant tale offers hope and solace to the victims of the prejudices that govern society even today. More sorrow overwhelms Anu when she realises that Anand chose not to reply to her letters. The murthu who acted in plays which had only happy endings, has her rendezvous with tragedy, that too in real life.
But she has lost all love and respect for him.
I Seldom do you come across a piece of fiction which leaves you in tears; still leaving a feeling of admiration and awe for the virtuosity and strength of character displayed by the protagonists.
