Ung’s book is full of vivid descriptions and keen observations that bring the vicissitudes of that era poignantly to life.
I do not know whether these exist in all versions of the book. A moment of high historical ooung, but perhaps the author was too young to remember the details. While Ung is happy to be away from the landmines and the aftermath of Pol Pot’s brutal regime, the guilt of leaving her family behind seeps in, as do vicious memories of the brutality she witnessed. Plenty were mere opportunists. As she got older, she discovered that she could only conquer the ghosts of her past by luxky her roots, and to rise above her personal losses and cild personal vengeance by making them her life-long cause.
As for Pol Pot, the young Loung Ung knew almost nothing about him, except that he was “fat” in a country of living skeletons. It also tells of the experiences of her surviving family members in Cambodia during the ensuing warfare between Vietnamese troops and the Khmer Rouge.
