I read this book some time ago, and I was so happy that it is listenrr available on kindle. She believes that dogs are unable to understand any other social model, and when co-opted into human families as pets still see themselves as pack members. Oh dear – I am confused! I was ready to put this book down after finishing the very long introduction because she mentioned Skinnerian conditioning which I associate with clicker training, and making yourself the alpha in the pack, which I associate with a certain TV trainer who urges what he calls “dominance” and what I call harsh and destructive.

I just bought a copy for my sister. I honestly don’t think Fennelll has any concept whatsoever of leadership. This book covers most common problems and behaviors Giving solutions and guidance. I like the focus on kindness with rules. I know a little bit about the theory but I’d love to hear from anyone who has a view about it. As humans, we treat our dogs with human emotion – but lisener we change our behaviour to fit in with a dog’s way of thinking, everything becomes easier and everyone in the pack is happier humans and dogs!
Thoughts on “training” the Jan Fennell way I do remember one phrase from the Jan Fennel book that described the difference between leadership and dominance – it was something about “you need to act in such a way that, if a leadership election was called tomorrow, your dogs listenerr vote for you to be the leader”.
