The love story between Blackthorne and Mariko is one of the most beautiful, and best written love stories I have ever read. There is a fight, which the Angisan loses, and then all of a sudden he is walking out with a priest with no explanation of why he has been let go.

Mariko is another wonderful character. I read 1, pages of a book I liked less and less as the pages went by. It’s probably like the Game of Thrones books but I’ve only seen the show.

For example Yabu is alone with an injured man and thinks I could easily kill him and no one would know. Toranaga orders Yabu — who he learns had helped the attack in Osaka with the aim of being on the winning side — to commit seppuku for his treachery.

The mind boggles at how many seppukus and decapitations and gruesome deaths happened throughout the book but you have to admire the sense of honour and duty and commitment to their cause that these characters had. Incredible insight into the Japanese culture before the European invasion.

To read this book and others like it one needs to check one’s self-importance at the door and go in with a easy going attitude. Clavell was clearly trying hard to accurately show the overly polite culture of feudal Japan.
