Heat and Dust

Although this is a short read, it really packs an emotional punch and it is beautifully written. Jhabvals trouble is that it all gets a bit Laura Ashley. Heat and Dust by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. I liked going off and discovering a book that no one, that I know jhabbvala, has been talking about lately. Her short fiction has regularly appeared in The New Yorker, and her story collections include East into Upper East and the critically acclaimed Out of India.

Part 1 Section 3. There’s no real sense of why she should have gone to India in the first place, beyond vague curiosity about her ancestors, and once she’s there no motive to her actions and reactions. An easy and excellent read. As you may sense I am a little conflicted in what I think about jhabvalx and am sitting firmly on the fence! It revolves around Olivia in the s, a new bride in India; married to a middle ranking and starchy civil servant and her step granddaughter who is unnamed in the s who is trying to find out about Olivia.

So, it is the story of social change as well as a potent love story. The author evokes the atmosphere of the Indian cities and countryside through hsat both women travel. She was perhaps best known for her long collaboration with Merchant Ivory Productions, made up of director James Ivory and the late producer Ismail Merchant. Of course I had read all the Kipling I could get my hands on when I was younger.

The early Man Booker winners do seem to get missed as reads now. It’s possible to forgive, perhaps, the many caricatures. She hoped that a baby would solve her problems but found it more difficult to become pregnant than she had thought.
