It seemed to me that Foster Wallace did so because he could get away with it, given the unusually foser density and distinctive voice of his writing. So maybe that’s the way to read it – as a collection of riffs, some of which are transcendent. The use of “rollents” where “roulants” would be correct is in keeping with other erroneous French words and phrases in the novel.
Of course, being me, Next meant almost two years later, over a hundred other titles read first, and after signing up for a joint group read, I actually started it. If you read 6 pages of footnotes there is no standard goodreads way to credit the page you are on, i guess footnote has been read will have to do, the footnote continues the new feeling the book and I have for one another haha! For me, DFW didn’t live up to wxllace responsibility. There’s not a clear beginning and end to the book, it’s more like fragments of scenes all scrambled up and you have put them infnita together in your mind as you go along. Probably this is related to my dislike of end notes and therefore my complete lack of practice using them. I have no thoughts as of yet. After any given Marathe section, I wanted to slink off to my chair of reclining in the room of my reading and bob on a whopper of Hope.
But a book like his, after getting through it, requires me to make some comment, even if no one will ever read it.
