In the Sunday Eucharist, the believing heart opens wide to embrace all aspects of the Church. Many of the insights and intuitions which prompt this Apostolic Letter have grown from my episcopal service in Krakow and, since the time when I assumed the ministry of Bishop of Rome and Successor of Peter, in the visits to the Roman parishes which I have made regularly on the Sundays of the different seasons of the Liturgical Year.
Certainly, Christians are no different from other people in enjoying the weekly day of rest; but at the same time they are keenly aware of the uniqueness and originality of Sunday, the day on which they are called to celebrate their salvation and the salvation of all humanity.
AAS 89; But, with its specific remembrance of the glory of the Risen Christ, the Lord’s Day recalls with greater intensity the future glory of his “return”. The Sabbath precept, which in the first Covenant prepares for the Sunday of the new and eternal Covenant, is therefore rooted in the depths of God’s plan. Saint Basil explains that Sunday symbolizes that truly singular day which will follow the present time, the day without end which will know neither evening nor morning, the imperishable age which will never grow old; Sunday is the ceaseless foretelling of life without end which renews the hope of Christians and encourages them on their way.

Christian Tradition — as the Declaration issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith points out so well — is clear and unanimous, from the beginning up to our own day, in describing abortion as a particularly grave moral disorder. Given these different dimensions which set it apart, Sunday appears as the supreme day of faith. Mankind can have only a faint intuition of this process, but Christians have the key and the certainty.
