I also enjoy the way Iggulden limns the account with little details that significantly enhance the mental image, details like the increasingly metallic taste and profuse fevered sweating that eventually overcomes Augustus, or talking of the gingered melon slices grabbing the attention of Consul Pansa, and the horrific details of what happens in the bowels of a sheering ship after the oars are sheared off by another ship.
It’s his son that takes centre stage, and it’s his story we follow, but as usual in these books, there is plenty of background information in the form of conversation.

He is the author of the number one bestselling Emperor series. The building of the ships in the lake and the canal to bblood them to sea is not a well-known fact and more credit should be given to Agrippa the man in charge who made it happen.
He is not historically famous only for this war, i was more int I always enjoy reading Iggulden kind of historical fiction that focus on military history,battles but i also really liked how he captured the color,life of Ancient Rome as city,culture,city politics in the earlier books in this series.

I’ve been struggling to write this review – I just found it blah.
Instead of being seen as liberators and heroes they are hounded and abused by the mob and with Mark Anthony cleverly using the mob to his own ends they soon have to flee the city. The book series is being adapted into a movie trilogy to be directed by Burr Steers.
His blood stains the hands of a cabal of bold conspirators, led by famed general Marcus Brutus—whom Caesar once called a friend.

No such Augustus in Iggulden’s latest. Published May 23rd by Harper Collins first published January 1st He is the type of guy you either hated at school or wanted as your best emperoor.
However, I do feel this should be the last book in the series. Like many historical writers, Conn Iggulden does not let historical accuracy interfere with a good story but always states at the end of his books in the historical notes what he has changed for the sake of keeping novel flowing.
And, the best thing? It has definately put me in the mood for reading more historical cobn again as I have been sticking to fantasy and sci-fi over the last gode of years. However as a stand alone book it is fantastic. They tackle completely different moments in history. It is counter-intuitive, but as Japanese kendo fighters will affirm, the instinctive reaction after thousands of hours of training is often faster than a blow resulting from a controlled decision.
This one however prompted me to turn a lot of pages without in fact reading them. However I decided to give book 5 a try. Mason rated it really liked it.
