It is an clellin fashioned sort of novel, in spite of its subject matter, an odd amalgam of the social chronicles of Balzac and the mad mystical dialogues of Dostoevsky. View all 3 comments.
It is David Stofsky Ginsbergthough, who is the most memorable: Ginsberg, especially, gets a starring role in this, as compared to On hllmes Road, where he plays second fiddle. Published two months before Kerouac began On the Road, Go is the first and most accurate chronicle of the private lives the Beats lived before they became public figures.
It’s also contains none of the passion and verve of Kerouac and other beat works, but this was Holmes’ admitted role with the beats, a somewhat detached observer on the fringe, rather than an ardent principal of the bea I enjoyed goo, and it’s a must-read for any beat aficionado.

He is also well-known for writing what is considered to be the definitive jazz novel of the Beat Generation, “The Horn. In fact the only thing I wasn’t expecting was the car chase, but then I suppose no book is perfect. Later there’s a shock of unexpected tragedy, then more totally unexpected comedy in the shadow of death, and next, tears were flowing, all within a few pages.
Hart Kennedy Cassady is not the romantic, almost mystical figure that he is in Kerouac, but rather a transparent sociopath, subject to fits of violence particularly against womenusing his philosophy of being in the moment as a cloak for criminal and irresponsible behavior.

New Amer Library Availability: Oct 27, J. After trawling through many a Kerouac novel as a youth I finally found “Go”. I really enjoyed this novel, for me it was fascinating to holmea such a different outlook into the beats.
The marriage between Hobbes and Kathryn falls on hard times, but they manage to weather her infidelity with Pasternak and her discovery that Hobbes has been writing love letters to holmees else for three years.
That is, life lived moment to moment as it unfolds. I wasn’t sure what to expect, being about the Beats but not by Kerouac, but it was phenomenally good.

I am reading through Kerouac’s Duluoz Legend chronologically by time period covered, and I inserted this book right before Town and the City. Where’s that high-rider sass, man? And the Durban station is no longer there, and Soldiers Way is probably called something else, hol,es if the Grosvenor Hotel is still there it too is probably called something else now. The two personalities that come most vividly to life are those of Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg. The Dharma Bums Jack Kerouac. He died of cancer in Lists with This Book.
Towards the end we get to see the events that caused Ginsberg to get arrested, and soon after there is some pretty good comedy involving a sort of cleaning up of a crime scene, essentially.

I think that was part of the appeal to me was that it reminded me so much of my life in my 20s and it flellon lovely to read about the lives of people 50 years earlier and having them do the same crazy things, and go to exactly the same parties and have some similar dramas.
