Chen Family Taijiquan Unpacked: Gongfu Utility System
Cen one would have included such complicated and numerous methods for no useful reason. He is said to be the creator of the guishou Taijiquan. In my earliest Chen Taijiquan instruction I was lucky enough to be exposed to a very detailed system of drills and practices. The book itself is not perhaps what those who have studied some taijiquan and particularly Chen style taijiquan might initially expect from the title. What will You Learn in Class?
As the title of the book is Tuishou push-handsit would be easy to say it was misleading. To become good at Chen Taijiquan takes practice and must include push hands Tui Shou training.

Not only is there detail regarding internal work and structure, but also technique; there are so many packed into the forms. Within its text it does assume a thorough grounding in taijiquan skills. Chen Taijiquan Gongfu Utilities is a teaching and practice curriculum that I have developed over many years of personal practice, research and teaching. He combined all the original Taijiquan forms into one long form. He has also accompanied his teacher to Chen Village, the birth place of Taijiquan, and also spent a great deal of time with his Sigong, Grandmaster Chen.
It makes little attempt to explain these skills. Weapon forms are taught in class after you have completed learning the beginning forms and will help you to extend your Taijiquan knowledge and use of energy. In that interest I have decided to make some of my own hard learned practices in this area public and if there is interest, teach them on a wider scale.
However if we want utility of the actual methods contained within we must actually unpack the forms. Lao means old and Xin means new. It clearly communicated the effort required to obtain basic physical abilities as well as taijiquan gong fu before attempting taijiquan tuishou. It makes a clear an unequivocal demand for a clear understanding of its fundamental skills, trained via the forms.
The 19 and 25 movement forms are the beginning foundation forms taught in class. They either have to figure it out taijisuan themselves or just dream about it.

He completed this book in and my compliments go to the translator and editor for an excellent job. Regarding number 3, well that is just self defeating. Having spoken with one of the editors while this book was being translated I looked forward to its completion with considerable interest.
The explanations are clear and the pictures very helpful. Chen Taijiquan has many weapon forms and these include broadsword, straight sword, spear, double swords, double broadsword.
I realize that give another decade or two this idea will be a corpse or just a ghost and all will be lost to sport, mysticism or reinventing the wheel. There are auxiliary practices of all kinds of course, but those are the main components. Regarding number 2, this one is easy enough to debunk just by a bit of understanding of the forms, which contain many many obvious striking, kicking, locking and other techniques.
Having studied with Grandmaster Chen famiy many years he has in turn developed a high level of skill, not only in forms but Tui Shou – Pushing Hands. Taijiquqn you learn to defend against strong attacks by using less energy.
