The plot was interesting and it took our favorite secret agent to new places, but the pacing felt off. My instincts were correct when I finished this book — Bond and Deaver together left me stirred, but not particularly shaken.

Deaver for not forgetting, and now the wedding is perfect. This is a good thriller that involves a planned terrorist plot. One needs to just enjoy the story as a story, and suspend complaints about deviations from Fleming’s ideal.

It’s not a problem, it just seems unnecessary. When I have recommended Fleming’s Bond books to people in the past I’ve told them that, while they are completely formulaic and a product of their time, they transcend the limits of formula thrillers and the constraints of outdated ideology through a careful literary feel for when to bypass the formula and a studied political ear for when to cut against then-popular group-think. This was a close one. I also got annoyed about the product placement – there was so much of it – perhaps that was for the film tie-in. Fleming was a master of succinct plotting and deft characterisation, his books deceptively slim but containing so much.
