Fans of the Tiffany Aching sub-series will want to read this as well to get a very early glimpse of the drinking, fighting and stealing tiny heroes. He’s also yerry alone – or so he thinks until he finds the ghost girl.
The title of the book is a parody of the phase Carpe Diem “Seize the day” and roughly translates as “Go for the throat”. Granny appears destined to become a vampire, but afterwards she recovers in the care of Oats. Also, he happens to be one of the fairest people in character invention.
Granny Weatherwax will always be a favourite! One of the things a witch did was stand right on the edge, where the decisions had to be made. Your plots may seem silly, occasionally, but that’s half the point, isn’t it?
Lacrimosa attacks Agnes in a strangely pathetic manner, several townspeople succeed in killing a vampire, and Vlad falls to temptation and bites Agnes although again, there is no permanent effect.
In this book, Granny Weatherwax is at her prickly best. The traditional thinking of the Old Count quickly proves far more popular with the people from Escrow than modern vampirism.
Anyway, I needed some kind of catharsis after the sad news, so I looked at my shelves and grabbed Carpe Jugulum. Previous book The Last Continent. Now he’s caught up in a war between vampires and witchesand he’s not sure there is a right side. Sorry, your blog cannot share posts by email. I was underwhelmed by The Truth, unimpressed and annoyed by Thief of Time despite being a Susan fanbored by The Last Hero, frustrated by Monstrous Regiment which starts great but ends up terribleand so-so about Going Postal.
Terry Pratchett Narrated by: I love this book, it’s good for an hour or two of laughs, and I’ve always been partial to the title.
It was written before vampires are supposed to sexy now, or whatever. What do you all think of that? So it plays off all the old standards. Granny’s got very little time for gods, but she’s got a good sense of what’s sacred and what’s a violation of that. It has the usual good humour and continues the witches series. Soon, they confront the vampires but look to be defeated and the Count only laughs at both their mob and Oats’ own attempt at defiance.
He is a traditionalist who spends his spare time breeding and distributing spiders for the dark corners of the castle.
Terrible sound quality Classic Pratchett, ably performed by Nigel Planer. There’s something about the stories involving the Witches from the town of Lancre that seems to lratchett out the best in Terry’s storytelling. Anyone who is looking for good Pratchett narration should go for the later Discworld unabridged books as performed by the amazing Stephen Briggs – whose voices are perfect for the characters and absolutely consistent between books.
The trouble was they seldom changed anything that worked either…His plans for better irrigation and agriculture were warmly applauded by the people from Lancre, who then did nothing about them. View all 4 comments. If you only ever read one Discworld book in your life although why you would limit yourself like that I do not know this needs to be it, along with most if not all of the others!
My point is that we have been here before. Fortunately, you feel that for other characters you’ve never read about before – poor Mightily Oats – so I shouldn’t think that newcomers to Pratchett will miss out on much. See 2 questions about Carpe Jugulum…. Much more forceful, and less of a limp dishrag. On the other hand, Agnes is a fun character and she featured prominently along with Nanny, so I was happy about that.
Even if I don’t always agree with the way Pratchett sees the world, he always delineates his views with such clarity and such precision, that I really love it.
Pratchett writes a real fat girl. But when he rescues a young czrpe from a beating, suddenly everybody wants to know him. Maskerade opened with Nanny trying to inject some fun into the life of a very depressed Granny.
I recommend this one highly, but I think you need to have read the other “Witch” novels first, that would be Equal RitesWyrd SistersWitches AbroadLords and Ladiesand Maske Pratchett satirizes vampire myth and legend in this Discworld novel. They defeat me every time.
And of course they are intent on taking over whatever part of Discworld they can get their hands on. But other than that it’s purely charming: Sure bad guys arrive and threaten Lancre, and the Witches step up to do battle in their patchett humorous ways. Total Perfection Absolutely brilliant, one of my go to Terry Prachett listens.
