The narrator’s accent sometimes seemed a little off but that’s understandable given the storyline. The Power of One is also available in an edition for younger readers, and Jessica has been made into an award-winning television miniseries.
The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character. As usual at the end of one of Courtenay’s books I’ve finished learning something about a culture and history I had little knowledge of previously but I’ve been so engrossed in the story during the telling that I didn’t realise it was happening at the time.
I didn’t like Simon overly much and was extremely frustrated by everything tondo with Mercy B Lord’s secrecy, though I guess I understand it.

Fortunately, Simon has a friend and eventually lover in Mercy B. Simon is supposed to be likeable and good-hearted but he’s completely self- absorbed and obsessed by looks – MBL’s and his own lack of them. The stage is set for the reader to be whisked briefly into the seventh decade of the twentieth century Sydney and the lives of the now prosperous descendants of the original characters, prior to moving north to Singapore’s emerging business world and its beautiful women.

When he takes a job in Singapore we learn the value of “face” and guanxi influence in Chinese business and culture. Some of the descriptions were agonising, and yet I finished it in just over a week, so really I must have enjoyed it: My first Bryce Coutenay book and if it is anything to go by Courgenay want to read more.

I loved this book. I got a little tired of hearing Simon referring to himself as I am audible book addict, and this is why listening to a good narrator is vital to me. Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands.
I have come to expect great story telling from this author, and while the story was there, it was not as compelling as his other books. But there are many strikes against his being able to do his job. There were many interesting details of Asian cultural ways and thinking in this book but the characters lacked somehow.

I enjoyed the entire plot as well as the family history that was revealing itself in the then present-day characters’ lives. That alone merits a bump up in the ratings—3 stars!
