Book Review: “Because They Wanted To” by Mary Gaitskill (A Collection of Short Stories)
The stories of “Because They Wanted To” were incredibly well-written, thought-provoking and – I found – painful, taken in full. I really wanted to like it, but there were a few things that I had a hard time getting past. I relate too much. See, in reading this collection, I realized yet again that I like my depression dark and dramatic, with plenty of brooding atmosphere.
Want to Read saving…. I mean, her grasp on character and dialogue was really excellent.

It’s a good story, but when you see it reflected again and again through the collection, you wonder when Gaitskill’s gonna step out of her comfort zone.
I tend to read more thinky rather than emotional writing gaitskikl this book was exactly what I needed. A real Romantic rooted in the physical aspect of existence.
Gaitxkill masterpiece collection from a writer who may arguably be one day considered Flannery O’Connor’s successor.
There is something about Mary Gaitskill’s emotional precision that I find off-putting and scientific.
If this happened in a Mary Gaitskill story, it would have been more fucked up and sexual. Basically a continuation of Bad Behavior. I just wanted her to let it go, and I knew she could.
I understand that sometimes this structure can really work and sometimes it really did but, for many of the stories, it felt like she was relying too heavily on becaus formula. I don’t recommend these stories. With that said, there were some stories that I thoroughly enjoyed. I would normally rate this 4 stars because I didn’t enjoy every gaitsikll honestly maybe because I didn’t get the point of thembut I’m giving it 5 stars because the ones I did enjoy, well I LOVED them.
