The protagonist is a young woman, Sara, whose unremarkable and not very happy life is interrupted by a nightmarish Alien kidnapping that sends her into an amnesiac fugue state.
The Worlds of Anne McCaffrey. I guess my tastes have changed because while I liked this book, I kept wishing for more. The Dragonriders of Pern. I think the main issue I had with Restoree is that it’s kind of directionless, and for a short, page book, it really nane and meanders and takes forever getting to the stuff that really matters to the reader.
And the plot is rollicking, even if you do have to do a helluva lot of suspending disbelief All the Weyrs of Pern. I liked the main characters and found the alien culture interesting and understandable as I was seeing it through Sara’s eyes and she was from Earth.
As an act of self-preservation she maintains her facade of witlessness until she discovers that there is a sinister purpose for her state and that of her ward, so she hatches a desperate plan to escape the situation and in the process discovers that the man she’s been attending to is the Regent of a faraway planet. I read this several decades ago but remember little about it. Refresh and try again. A lot in the plot is pretty creaky. Along with plenty of blushing in response to grinning.
A snne Sara realizes she is on an entirely different planet and that the man she is tending is being deliberately drugged. “Restoree” by Anne McCaffrey
There was a sudden stench of a dead sea creature. The relationship between Sara and Harlan is like something out of a vintage romance novel, except that Sara has skills and talents and is a competent human being. Whiplash – a 20th century woman suddenly turns into a 19th century style maiden — even down to having a fainting fit.
The willy nilly aspect led to me buying more than a couple of books not in the Pern universe. However, this story just didn’t ring my bell like most of hers do. Did it feel a bit dated? Torn from Earth by a bizarre and nameless black force, Sara had no idea where she was or why she was in a beautiful new body.

Nov 07, Carolyn F. The Renegades of Pern. Together they escape and set out restotee save Lothar from political enemies and all the human worlds from the Mil. Closer to the Chest. Additionally, the key plot point of Restoration and Sara being a Restoree is hinted at throughout but isn’t really explained until very late in the book at which point all the fears about it that Harlan hints at end up being more or less unfounded which cheapens a lot of the tension that propels the book forward, such that it is.
I can’t believe this book was anbe in because except for a few small things it felt like a modern sci-fi book.
Sara is walking restoref Central Park one minute, then the next minute she is nursemaid to a nearly catatonic man restoee a different planet, with her memories of the events in between hazy. Women are expected to bear children and men are ridiculed for being virgins seems pretty close to a s mentality.
