Overall, it was an entertaining read once I got past the diversions and really got into the noovel, but it’s pretty clear that the graphic novel doesn’t quire stand up on its own – hence the rest of the novels not getting adaptations as well. It really was a treat to get to see the different planes the way Bartimaeus gets to see them, the imps, the demons, and of course the climax of the story was quite captivating.


The narration in this book alternates between two main characters, Nicholas, also known as John Mandrake, a twelve-year-old human boy, and Bartimaeus, a djinn, sometimes referred to incorrectly according to Bartimaeus as a demon. Like in movies, the author and illustrator need to strike a delicate balance. The graphic novel samaekand a nice job of trying to capture that ineffable character that is Bartimaeus, however the shortened format really can’t do him justice.
